A&WMA Vancouver Island Chapter
Guidelines for a successful A&WMA presentation at the Cedar Hill Golf Course
1. Allow your presentation to tell a logical and straightforward story. Emphasize key points.
2. Begin with a brief outline and a list of the take-home messages. This will help the audience know where your story is going. Repeat these take-home messages at the end.
3. Your audience is scientifically literate and motivated to learn, but most will at best only have a passing familiarity with your topic. We can send you a list of attendees a few days before the talk if you wish.
4. Your talk should be 20 minutes long. We suggest that slides remain up for about one or two minutes, with graphical slides up for a longer time than text slides. All-text slides should be kept to a minimum. Please rehearse the presentation.
5. Please cut out unnecessary detail, but keep the story interesting. Define the key terms and acronyms used in your talk.
6. Graphs should be legible on your computer monitor from three metres away, including the axis titles. Keep the background simple – one colour or a gradual fade. Avoid light colours like yellow – they tend to disappear on the screen, partially because the room at Cedar Hill is a little on the bright side.
7. Ensure that the audience is aware that there will be 10 minutes for questions at the end.
In general, doors open at 11:30 a.m. for friendly and informal networking. Lunch is served at 12:00. Presentations are from 12:30 to 12:50 with questions between 12:50 and 13:00. The Venue is the Cedar Hill Golf Course, 1400 Derby Road, Victoria, B.C.
