New Metro Vancouver Water Filtration Plant - May 21, 2009

The BC & Yukon Chapter organized a tour of the new Metro Vancouver water filtration plant in North Vancouver, which will filter all the drinking water from both the Capilano Reservoir and the Seymour Reservoir. Tour attendees received a presentation from engineers involved in plant design and construction, as well as a walking tour of the facilities. The observed that the plant boasts some innovative air quality, climate change and waste initiatives within its design and operation.

Environmental Professionals Mixer - May 7, 2009

The BC & Yukon Chapter held their first ever Environmental Professionals Mixer on May 7, 2009 at the Elephant and Castle in downtown Vancouver. The goal of the event was to provide an opportunity for future, young, and seasoned environmental professionals to mingle in a casual environment. With a turnout of over 70 people, the event was a great success, so we're planning another mixer for Fall 2009.

Land Use, Transportation & Air Quality: Making Healthier Decisions - October 27, 2009

Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, Burnaby, BC

The A&WMA BC & Yukon Chapter, BC Lung Association, Fraser Basin Council and several other partners were proud to host this workshop. It was designed to facilitate an ongoing, active dialogue between municipal and regional planners, transportation engineers, health experts, air quality professionals and decision-makers and foster effective collaboration and the implementation of healthier, air quality-friendly decisions.

CPANS Conference: Facing Emerging Challenges - April 2-3, 2009

Held in Calgary, Alberta in April 2009, the CPANS (Canadian Prairie and Northern Section of the A&WMA) Annual Conference focused on the impacts of uncertainties in the world economy on approaches to Climate Change, Green Energy, Energy Efficiency, and other environmental initiatives. Changing Climate, Uncertain Futures, and Evolving Practices - April 21-23, 2008

One of the greatest climate change challenges facing British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is applying uncertain predictions to engineering-type problems that demand immediate analysis and decisions regarding future impacts. In response to this challenge, local chapters of the A&WMA and the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) organized a symposium in Vancouver, BC in April 2008 to provide guidance to practitioners on utilizing the available data for decision-making and understanding its limitations. Environmental Nuisances: Noise, Light, Odour, & Fugitive Dust - May 7-9, 2007

Held in Richmond, BC in May 2007, this conference focused on the technological developments, case studies, and solutions to Environmental Nuisances. It included a half-day plenary session on the policy aspects of environmental nuisances, two half-day concurrent sessions on noise, light, odour, and fugitive dust, and a half-day plenary session dealing with stakeholder participation and management issues. This conference included participants from municipal, regional, federal and provincial government (especially those from Environment, Transportation, and Infrastructure departments); academia; business; agricultural business; and consultants. Managing Ship Emissions and Effluents: A North American Perspective - May 22-24, 2006

Held in May 2006 in Vancouver, BC, this international conference focused on the control and management of air emissions and liquid effluents from ships, emphasizing the environmental issues associated with North American shipping. The program explored technological advances, regulatory issues, and cooperative international relationships affecting the shipping industry. The conference featured speakers from Canada and the United States, as well as some European nations.
